Yarn Review: Mary Maxim’s New Simply Natural Yarn

Today’s post is a yarn review on Mary Maxim’s new “Simply Natural” yarn.

I’m so excited about this yarn release because it’s been a long time coming. I had the absolute privilege of being one of the first to ever see or touch this yarn. Here are some details about the yarn listed down below for those who (like me) love reading the labels on your yarn:

Mary Maxim’s Simply Natural Yarn:

Yarn Weight: 3 Light

Yarn Ball Weight: 3.5oz (100g)

Yarn Length: 245 yds (224 m)

Gauge: 22 sts and 28 rows to makes a 4’x4′ square knitted w/ size 6 (4mm) knitting needles

Fiber Content: 52% Cotton, 48% Bamboo

Now onto the fun stuff…the YARN!!

This super soft yarn comes in 12 colors ranging from pastels like “Blush and Mist” to vibrant colors like “Jamaica Bay(my personal fav) and Crimson”. It’s priced at $5.99 per skein on their website and for a cotton bamboo blend yarn I think it’s a reasonable price for the yardage you get. It is very comparable to Lion Brands “Coboo” yarn, you just get a bit more yardage with the Simply Natural yarn.

I had the opportunity to pick which colors I would like to receive, so I chose “Jamaica Bay”, “Stonewash (which is another fav) and “Blush”. If you’ve seen my Iris Spring Beanie you would’ve seen the blush and stonewash colorways. Photographing this yarn was a dream. The colors turn out very true and don’t get washed out by the light.

I really did have a very good experience working with this yarn on multiple projects. It’s so light weight and breathable, perfect for any summer projects that you may have in mind. I made a spring/summer scarf out the the “Jamaica Bay” colorway and wore it on the only warm day we’ve had here in Michigan so far and it was the perfect touch to my outfit. It gave me that pop of color I needed and I didn’t get overheated wearing it all day which is a plus.

The stitch definition you get from this yarn is excellent. My stitches really did pop and that’s very important to me when making accessories. Now I did experience some yarn splitting but I don’t always attribute that to the yarns construction. For me it also has to do with the hook you use. Sometimes hooks can cause your yarn to split and that’s what happened to me. It was an easy fix, I changed my hook and didn’t have a problem after that. I even used my Furls Streamline hook and it also worked well with the yarn. I was shocked because sometimes wooden hooks don’t always glide well with some fibers.

All in all, I will totally be purchasing this yarn in the other colorways they offer. I’m super excited to make some summer clothing pieces that I’ll be showcasing in an upcoming blog series.
